Re: Cannot make a copy of Windows XP Mode.vmdk

Assuming the Virtual Machine is shutdown then not being able to copy a file under a Windows Host is not a VMware issue per se, it's a Windows issue!

The fact that you cannot copy the file, even while while in Safe Mode, could be due to a corrupted Filesystem, have you run chkdsk /f or the block storage device has bad sectors and or is failing.

Why not go to the latest version if you patch it anyway. I updated the Windows based vCenter Server in my office to Update 1a.

Unable to pin icons to taskbar using Persona Management

Everytime I pin an icon to the taskbar on Windows 7, then shutdown the host and log back into the same pool, the icons on the taskbar are blank and when you click on them it says:

“Can’t open this item.  It might have been moved, renamed, or deleted.  Do you want to remove this item?”

VMware View Persona GPO has been enabled with the following policies:

- Manage user Persona (interval time = 1 minute)

- Persona repository location (Share path added)

- Roam local settings folders

I have also performed the following as well:

To fix the problem edit your template after Syspreping by adding the following folders – “User Pinned” and “Taskbar” as follows:

- C:\Users\Default\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned

- C:\Users\Default\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\Taskbar

Shut down.  Snapshot.  Recompose.  Done.

Still no luck.

Anybody else experiencing this?

> A snapshot is taken when powering off.

IMHO thhe graphical interface for managing snapshots in Workstation has a few options that should have better been hidden because they are stupid or even dangerous.
"Take snapshot when the VM is powered off" is a good exaample.
Best practice tells us that a snapshot should only be created when it really makes sense - as every additional snapshot makes the VM slower and more fragile, creating one every time the VM is powered off does not make a lot of sense.
Please also realize that snapshots are not suitable as backups - on the contrary - a VM with snapshots is more fragile then a VM without so it is even more important to make sure you have a backup that can be restored in case something goes wrong.

Given your large amount of vmdk-files I would not even consider using Snapshot-manager to consolidate the snapshots. If this fails you also risk the current state - instead use vmware-vdiskmanager as WoodyZ already told you.
As vdiskmanager creates a clone and does not modify the current vmdks no damage is done should vdiskmanager fails. All that would be lost would be the time wasted while waiting for the result.
So with vdiskmanager you do not need a to create a backup first.
If you use Snapshotmanager you MUST take a backup of the directory before starting.

I haven't worked much with the Nexus switches but yes VMware recommends Portfast on the uplink ports for hosts. It seems to be on the Nexus switches portfast equivalent is Port Edge It may not be the issue but it should get you looking to make sure your physical ports are configured properly across the environment and your vDS per recommendations.  That is just because it is happening across all clusters and multiple software versions.

Migrate from a Virtual Distributed Switch to a Standard Switch using PowerCLI

0
0

I need to migrate vms on a host that uses a Virtual Distributed Switch to a newly created Standard Virtual Switch. I want to utilize the nics that the VDS is using for the new VSS.

The steps I want to accomplish:

  1. Create a new VSS
  2. Assign the VLANS that are associated with the VDS.
  3. Move the nics from the VDS to the VSS.
  4. Migrate the VMs to the new VSS.

I am trying to accomplish this with a script but I am not sure if this is written correctly. (See below)

Connect-VIServer vcenter -User XXX -Password XXX

# ESXi hosts to migrate from VSS->VDS

$vmhost_array = @("XXXX.com")

# Create VDS

$vds_name = "vSwitch2"

Write-Host "`nCreating new VDS" $vds_name

$vds = New-VDSwitch -Name $vds_name -Location (Get-Datacenter -Name "VDC")

# Create DVPortgroup

Write-Host "Creating new QA-LAB"

New-VDPortgroup -Name "QA-Lab" -Vds $vds | Out-Null

foreach ($vmhost in $vmhost_array) {

# Add ESXi host to VDS

Write-Host "Adding" $vmhost "to" $vds_name

$vds | Add-VDSwitchVMHost -VMHost $vmhost | Out-Null

# Migrate pNIC to VDS (vmnic11/vmnic7)

Write-Host "Adding vmnic11/vmnic7 to" $vds_name

$vmhostNetworkAdapter = Get-VMHost $vmhost | Get-VMHostNetworkAdapter -Physical -Name vmnic11

$vds | Add-VDSwitchPhysicalNetworkAdapter -VMHostNetworkAdapter $vmhostNetworkAdapter -Confirm:$false

$vmhostNetworkAdapter = Get-VMHost $vmhost | Get-VMHostNetworkAdapter -Physical -Name vmnic7

$vds | Add-VDSwitchPhysicalNetworkAdapter -VMHostNetworkAdapter $vmhostNetworkAdapter -Confirm:$false

# Migrate VMkernel interfaces to VDS

# dv QA-LAB #

$QALAB_portgroup = "dv QA-LAB"

Write-Host "Migrating" $QALAB_portgroup "to" $vds_name

$dvportgroup = Get-VDPortgroup -name $QALAB_portgroup -VDSwitch $vds

$vmpg = Get-VMHostNetworkAdapter -Name QA LAB -VMHost $vmhost

Set-VMHostNetworkAdapter -PortGroup $dvportgroup -VirtualNic $vmpg -confirm:$false | Out-Null

# Migrate remainder pNIC to VDS (vmnic7/vmnic11)

Write-Host "Adding vmnic11/vmnic7 to" $vds_name

$vmhostNetworkAdapter = Get-VMHost $vmhost | Get-VMHostNetworkAdapter -Physical -Name vmnic7

$vds | Add-VDSwitchPhysicalNetworkAdapter -VMHostNetworkAdapter $vmhostNetworkAdapter -Confirm:$false

$vmhostNetworkAdapter = Get-VMHost $vmhost | Get-VMHostNetworkAdapter -Physical -Name vmnic11

$vds | Add-VDSwitchPhysicalNetworkAdapter -VMHostNetworkAdapter $vmhostNetworkAdapter -Confirm:$false

}

<i><b>Disconnect-VIServer -Server $global:DefaultVIServers -Force -Confirm:$false

Any help would be appreciated. The ultimate goal will be to perform this then disconnect the host from the vcenter 4.1 and add it to the 5.0 vcenter.

Re: VMware Workstation unrecoverable error

I ran into a similar error to yours however I managed to replicate the problem using a different configuration. I figured I would post about it just in case someone else is running into a similar issue and is wondering.

My VM is using VMware Player 6.0.2 with Windows 7. I recently upgraded my office to 2013 from 2010. This must have changed how the graphics acceleration makes calls to the Nvidia graphics libraries because my machine began to crash every time I would use Office. The error was the following:

error.jpg

unrecoverable error: (vthread-16)

Exception 0xc0000005 (access violation)

Changing to a non accelerated version of the VM as per the resolution on this thread seemed to work. Also, I rolled back the VM from a backup to the version pre Office 2013 install and it worked properly again. My hunch is Windows 8 or Office 2013 trigger calls to routines in the nvidia graphics drivers that Office 2010 and Windows 7 don't touch. Those calls must conflict with the rendering calls in VMware and BAM you get a crash. Would be really interested to know if anyone else is running Windows 8 and/or Office 2013 successfully in VMplayer and on specifically on what version of the nvidia graphics drivers.

Hopefully VMware or Nvidia will fix this issue. I was about to purchase VMware Workstation 10 just so I could have some support to attempt to feedback the problem into VMware but alas I have to purchase 10 copies of the software to buy a support contract. Yep... not going to happen for my home office.

Re: Can I delete this datastore and extend the other ?

I never had to convert a RAID set myself yet, so I can't tell you exactly how and whether it will work. In any case I'd strongly recommend that you backup the VM prior to converting or recreating the RAID set. Since you are using ESXi 4.0 you may want to read VMware Front Experience: How to run the HP Online ACU CLI for Linux in ESXi 4.x for instructions on how to online convert the RAID set with a workaround.

Personally I'd probably backup the VM, delete the datastore, recreate the RAID, create a new datstore and finally restore the VM. However, you may - after the backup - try the workaround and if it doesn't work, you can still re-create the RADI and restore the VM.

Whatever you are going to do, I'd be interested in a short feedback.

Re: New-VM cmdlet always deploys "Thin-provisioned" VMs - need help

Thanks for sharing.  Just noticed this behavior in a deployment system I'm building...

"Correct Answer" was posted March 7th.  PowerCLI 5.5 U2 was released March 11th.  I suppose they meant two major releases from then...

I assume PowerCLI won't be updated out of band, despite what appears to be a broken feature?  Any tips on workaround?  Ideally with minimal to no processing, no migration?

Note that this behavior is not from a template.  This is a straight up empty VM.  Here are the parameters I pass New-VM:

    $newVMParams = @{        Name = $Name        VMHost = $vmhost        Location = $folder        Datastore = $datastore        DiskGB = $DiskGB        DiskStorageFormat = 'Thick'        MemoryGB = $MemoryGB        NumCPU = $NumCPU        PortGroup = $virtualPortGroup        GuestID = $GuestID    }

It looks like the multiple trials of update caused some problems. Are you okay with using the new install or do you still need to use updated instance?

Re: Disk Capacity Metrics missing

What do you mean? The majority capacity on your disk disappear?

Maybe virus attack.

Just try anti-virus software to remove the virus.

By the way, if you find some files lost, try 4Card Recovery.

Re: Wheres my data?

DATA LOST?

WHY NOT TRY RECOVERY TOOL?

FOR EXAMPLE, 4CARD RECOVERY, ICARE AND MANY OTHERS.

HAVE A TRY.

First, download 4Card Recovery on the internet and install it on your computer.

Next, run it and select all to recover so that you will not miss anything.

Then, click the next button to scan it, and you are supposed to wait for about ten minutes here. So to be relax, and do not get into panic if you find it is keeping scanning.

Finally, store your recovered files on other part.

You need to provide more information to get even a guess:

NAT or Bridged?

Wired or wireless?

Result of the following commands:

ifconfig

route

ipconfig/all on the host?

can you ping the host?

If you use a router, can you ping it?

can you ping the DNS servers?

You need to have valid vSAN licenses.

Plz refer below questions/ans for more details.

  • How do I add a Virtual SAN / VSAN license?
    • VSAN licenses are applied on a cluster level. Open the Webclient click on your VSAN enabled cluster, click the “Manage” tab followed by “Settings”. Under “Configuration” click “Virtual SAN Licensing” and then click “Assign License Key”.
  • How will Virtual SAN be priced / licensed?
    • VSAN is licensed per socket, the price is $ 2495 per socket or $ 50,- per VDI user. Note that the license includes the Distributed Switch and VM Storage Policies, even when using a vSphere license lower than Enterprise Plus!
