Re: Workstation or Fusion Pro?

Yes, I realize that Fusion is only for Mac, no for Win. I firstly understood wrong.

Perhaps the VMs that work have older versions of the virtual hardware, and therefore don't support these features.

Error in ESXi 5.5 U1 when implementing a kickstart referencing the ISO

$

Hi VMware Gurus,

I ran into a problem installing with custom kickstart script.  I began by following William Lam's virtually ghetto blog site on how to create and ESXi ISO with a custom kickstart added into it.

I've modified the boot.cfg.

Before: kernelopt=runweasel

After: kernelopt=ks=file://etc/VMware/weasel/custks.cfg and at the end of the modules I put the tar file into the ranks adding in --- /custks.tgz

I also added the custks.tgz into the main directory of this ISO.

I got two errors when I tried installing.

When booting in EFI mode:

error1.png

It says "Modules relocation error".

When running in Legacy mode, I get a different error:

error2.png

It says "Error loading /s.v00 Fatal error: 10 (Out of resources)"

I've digged through this forum but haven't seen anyone run into my first error, but a few with my second error, but their solutions didn't work.

Any suggestions?  Thanks for reading.

Workstation USB Arbitrator conflict with Virtual Ethernet WinUSB driver

$

We're working with a Win Phone Development kit and we've apparently found an issue with VMware Workstation's USB arbitrator -- without any VMs running, the device that is enumerated for our kernel debugging environment on our host system is immediately disconnected.  If we disable the USB arbitrator service (which also disables the VMware Workstation Server service) or uninstall VMware Workstation 10, the virtual ethernet KDNET debugging session operates as expected.

Is there a way to tell the USB arbitrator to specifically ignore certain devices?  We want the USB device (VID_045E&PID_0644) to be left exclusively to the host and unhindered by anything from VMware Workstation.

This really helped me out recently, thanks! One thing I had to change for my case was the second instance of this:

currentDevice instanceof VcVirtualVmxnet

To this:

currentDevice instanceof VcVirtualVmxnet3

As I was dealing with a VM that has a vmxnet3 adapter type and I noticed VcVirtualVmxnet was listed twice in the device instances, but no reference of vmxnet3.

Re: Get-View to replace Get-VM

Hi Matt,

Here is a partial answer for you:

1) Part 1

# Get-View:

$VMs =Get-view -viewtype virtualmachine

#Update View info with VM host

$VMs.UpdateViewData("Runtime.Host.Name")

This will return a collection of VM view information that you can run in a for Loop.

ForEach ($VM in $VMs)

{

$NewINfo.Name = $VM.Name

$NewInfo.PowerState = $VM.runtime.powerstate

$NewInfo.MemoryMB =  $vm.config.Hardware.MemoryMB

$NewInfo.HostMemoryUsage = $vm.summary.quickstats.hostMemoryUsage

}

2) Getting Cluster Name:

http://psvmware.wordpress.com/tag/get-cluster-name-for-vms-in-powercli/

3) If you are running that many VC and VMs , you may want consider running several scripts in parallel.

One per VCenter . Then gather each of these subreports in one large one.

Note: In something this large, you would probably want to store this information into a larger repository such as a database. You would also want to tweak your script(s) so that you can "cache" as much of the results as possible into collections of objects so you can later search for this information instead of using several "Get"

commands to get the same info.

For instance:

Think of this ratio

Many VMs -> one Host

Many Hosts -> One Cluster

Many Clusters -> VCenter

Many PortGroups -> One VSwitch / DVSwitch

Many Hosts -> Storage

You can use RVTools (RVTools - Home) to connect to your vSphere, go to vHealth tab and check for zombie vmdk.

This zombie files can be safety removed, since they are not associated with virtual machines.

does virtual flash hot swap cache feature supported in vsphere standard edition

Re: The file specified is not a virtual disk

From a quick look at the files it seems that the ...-flat.vmdk file has a non-expected file size. It should have a size of exactly 100GB, but according to the file list it only has 99GB!? Since it is a flat file, it might be possible to try and append another GB to the file to see whether this helps. Another option - if you don't necessarily need the contents in the snapshot - would be to modify the .vmdk descriptor file to make it appear as a 99GB virtual disk!?

Welcome to the community!

unfortunately NOT ... because "Host swap cache" is sub feature of  vSphere Flash Read Cache for which you must have vSphere Enterprise Plus license.

Hi,

Machster wrote:

BTW, since I initially opened the vm with the Preview I cannot open it with version 6.0.4. I assume at some point the non-preview will catch up?

No, the non-preview Fusion 6.x will not open VMs that run under Preview as by default the Preview version uses a newer virtual hardware version (version 11) as is supported by Fusion 6 (up to version 10).

You can however change the virtual hardware version on your VM by going to VM -> Settings -> Compatibility.

Note that in order to change hardware version your VM has to be shut down (not suspended).

hope this helps,

VMware WS 10 not able to ping outside the machine using usb eth adapter

$

Hello all,

My configuration in brief :

PC1 - WIn 7 OS : 10.0.1.242

VM - Ubuntu 10 : 10.0.1.17 [ Guest OS in vm on PC1 ]

PC2 - Win 7 OS : 10.0.1.10

I have vmware ws 10 installed on PC1 machine and installed guest ubuntu 10 in it. PC1 has one onboard NIC and one USB-Eth adapter. In VM, VMnet1 is bridged to Onboard NIC and VMnet2 is bridged to USB-Eth.

The usb-eth adapter is able to work on PC1, no issues with that. I am also able to bridge it in Virtual Network Editor ( VNE ) to Vmnet2. After doing so my VM ubuntu and PC1 are able to ping each other. But VM ubuntu is not able to ping PC2 on same network while PC1 can.

Now if I change the setting in VNE and change mapping from Vmnet2 to Vmnet1 ( Onboard NIC ) the VM is also able to ping the PC2.

Now I tried this with the USB-Adapter on other machines and in windows it works fine but it gives problem with ubuntu VM. Has anyone come across such issue ? How can this be solved ?

Thanks

Ankur

With the current network configuration the 3 vmnics are shared by storage, management as well as VM traffic which is not the best practice. Anyway, what's the backup target, i.e. does the backup use the vmnics too in order to transfer the data to the backup target?

I'd start troubleshooting by running esxtop from the ESXi host's console, to determine the load on the vmnics during backup.

A corrupted download can be caused by e.g. networking issues, a proxy, ... What you may try to do is to run the download from another PC (with different Internet connection) to see whether this works.

Hi,

your NIC isn't compatible/supported with ESXi thus installer doesn't contain any inbox driver for it...

But you have an option to add some other NIC to the system which is listed on HCL an will work with ESXi.

Another option is to run nested ESXi inside VMware Workstation ...on that hardware... but that is the last possibility.

For compatible devices have a look at VMware HCL list:

Guided Search Wizard

Or you can try to create custom ISO with desired drivers have a look at these sources:
