Re: Issue Entering Unity Mode Suddenly?

$

UPDATE (...bump...):

So this morning I got a notification that there was an update for Vmware Player, new version is 6.0.4 build-2249910. So i ran the update and started

up my Windows XP VM but I still got the error that "The guest operating system's resolution cannot be changed.". In my previous post I said I could still

change that even though I got that error, but I'm realizing they probably meant resizing the VM by changing the VMPlayer's window size, not the resolution

from within the Windows XP VM. So I actually cannot change the size of the VM by doing "Enter Fullscreen" or just resizing the window manually,

nothing happens...

So I tried again to completely remove VMTools and reinstall it. After I finished installing and rebooted the VM, I was able to enter into Unity mode and adjust

the window size of the VM, but within 30 seconds to a minute the VM automatically exited Unity mode and I cannot change the resolution anymore. So it

seems like vmtools works correctly for a minute after reinstalling it but then stops working very quickly... And I didn't see any kind of error in vmware.log when

this happened, except for maybe this error, but I'm seeing this one over and over again: *The error is in BOLD below...

2014-10-31T11:23:04.404-05:00| mks| I120: MKS-SWB: Number of MKSWindows changed: 1 rendering MKSWindow(s) of total 2.

Best practices for backing up a webserver VM??

$

This question stems from another thread I created, but I figure I might as well start a fresh thread since it is its own question.

Basically I have an environment that I inherited when I started my new job, within that environment there is a lone VM which runs our webserver and was created using VMware player (going to be switching to workstation for the snapshot functionality).

I'm extremely concerned with the fact that there was no backup strategy for it, so I'm interested in finding out the best way to back this VM up.

Being that it is a VM I was thinking snapshot, but of course I'm open to whatever the best practices dictates.

A lot of what I've read so far indicates stopping or suspending the VM then copying the files, however is there a way to do this without taking down my webserver temporarily?  Its just that we have global customers that access the server from different timezones and I'd like to have it up 24/7.

Hmm. Is there anything in the Windows event logs that might help?

Re: Migrate hosts to new vCenter without maintenance mode (vCenter 5.0 to 5.5)

As soon as the hosts are connected to the new vCenter Server, the required bits are updated on the hosts, and you shouldn't have any issues with this. I did this with 4.1 hosts as well as 5.x hosts and didn't have any issues yet. What's important - and supported in your case - is to always check the interoperability between products like vCenter Server and ESX/ESXi hosts to avoid issue (see VMware Product Interoperability Matrixes)

Issue with Linux Blueprint not receiving HOSTNAME or IP address after provisioning

$

We are running VCAC 6.x and I have setup a blueprint for a RHEL 5 linux build. Network profiles have been setup, along with ip ranges. When I provision the blueprint the machine doesn't get the HOSTNAME that is set. Also the network interface comes up, has a MAC address but has no IP address assigned. When I login to vcac and check the IP reservations, I see that an IP HAS been assigned. What am I missing here?

confirmed that putting the mac to sleep fixes the problem until the next reboot of the mac, no matter how many times  you launch/quit fusion or the vm.

The last time I tried this I didn't even bother shutting down the vm, just put the mac to sleep, waited for the disk to stop spinning, woke the mac and the vm resumed, and high utilization was gone, interrupts at normal.

Hello Samantha,

Thanks for your reply, but it seems that I didn't express my question clearly enough because your answer covers the opposite of what I want to do.

I want to invite a supplier as an External Contributor and have him stay an External Contributor -- and to make sure that he has a limited vision of the community -- access only to a private group and no way to see the company stream or any content at all outside of this private group. I have not worked out how to get this done.

I know how to convert a Member to an External Contributor, but this feature does not help me because in the registration flow of a normal member, you are exposed to the entire community. I do not wish to have this supplier EVER have that kind of access.

I hope I have been clearer in stating my problem. Does Socialcast provide a secure way to invite a supplier into the community without exposing the community?

Best regards,

Howard

HA or FT for server maintenance?

$

I'm spinning up a new print server in our VMWare / ESXi 5.5 environment.

I'd sure like to be able to take it offline for maintenance (service pack updates, microsoft updates, etc.) without keeping the entire company from being able to print.

I have HA enabled on the cluster and setup fault tolerance logging on our vmotion network. I can enable FT on a test VM.

So how to I "failover" to the secondary VM and log into the primary to do updates? I would then need to return to using the primary. And push the changes to the secondary.

Also, as an aside, I had to do all this work in the fat client. My primary and secondary vm's show up in the fat client, but not in the web client.

Thanks!

VMWare player issues

I'm running VMware player..

Use the following link paragraph #1 to set up VMware environment: http://www.oratraining.com/blog/2013/03/installing-11g-release-2-real-application-clusters-11gr2-rac-on-linux-x86-64-virtual-machine-vm-step-by-step-installation-guide/

1. Added second network adapter host-only to the VM.

2. Started Linux VM and changed IPs in eth0 and eth1 to static IPS

3. My windows host is not on the network.

4. Whe I ping dhost1 I get IP different from the one I set up in eth0.

Will I be able to set up VM environment like in the link above using my WMware player and having host not on the network?

Thank you in advance.

Tangentially to this thread: ESXi cannot function without ACPI. It's been years since ESX could run on a non-ACPI system. If you found a "disable ACPI" option on an HP server and ESXi was able to boot with that selected, it wasn't really disabling ACPI. Who knows what it was really doing.

Great info, thanks. I was helping with ESXi bringup on Mac Pro here, and the Mac I was using had firmware MP61.0116.B05. Probably all the Macs we were working with had that firmware, so we didn't know there was an issue with .B04. (There were some issues with .B05, but we put in workarounds for those.)

Hi Howard,

Thanks for the clarification! Your use case outlines the exact purpose of our External Contributors feature! In order to invite a user an External Contributor you need to:

1. Create an External-Facing Group (only admins and EC admins have the ability to do this)

2. As an admin or EC admin, invite the email to that specific group as role: External Contributor

You can read more about External Contributors here: http://developers.socialcast.com/admin/external-contributors/

Re: Cannot Start vCenter Server Appliance - "Waiting for vpxd to initialize: ....failed"

$

Hi there,

I have exact same problem on the linux- based vCenter server appliance 5.5 installed with OVA on the ESXi host 5.5.

I used:

Name: VMware-vCenter-Server-Appliance-5.5.0.20200-2183109_OVF10.ova

Release Date: 2014-10-09

Build Number: 2183109

All services can start except the vCenter.  It always says :

Starting vmware-vpxd: success

"Waiting for vpxd to initialized: .failed'.

I have checked the time on ESXi host and the vCenter and they matched since both the ESXi host and vCenter sync to same ntp server.

My DataBase is embedded and SSO is also embedded.  "Test Settings" is successful.

However, it doesn't work.

Anyone knows about this problem please help.

A few years ago I participated in a similar discussion (I am about to pull my hair out!!) where Windows incorrectly detected the virtual disk and placed it under "Other Devices" in the Device Manager. Can you please check whether it is the same in this case?

Hi mntnbighker,

I've checked your concern on my environment and no serious problem was found.

Trivial one was that all VM inventory existed was erased after reboot

although I've not still known the real reason for it until now...
