In vCloud 5.1.2, I'm noticing the following behavior:
When selecting "Add vApp from Catalog" and when the vApp template is marked as "Customize VM settings", you are unable to choose the lease times. Initially, the Name, Description and Lease drop-down boxes are visible but grayed out. Then the screen updates and only the Name and Description fields are available and the Leases section says:
"This vApp will remain powered on for 7 days and will be deleted 30 days after power-off or suspend. You can edit these leases at anytime in the future by going to the vApps properties."
The 7 and 30 days are not what the org is configured for, but at the summary screen at the end of the wizard it does show the proper days.
If the vApp template is marked as "Make Identical Copy" or if you choose the "Build New vApp" option, you're able to select the lease. I looked in the documentation and didn't see anything regarding this and in vCloud 1.5.x, you were able to choose the leases when the vApp template was set to customize.
I've tried this as a sysadmin and a vApp user.
Has anyone seen this before? Is it expected behavior? Thanks.
Thanks, first thing I do tomorrow morning.

VMware loves to sell licenses. Well I can tell you that you are losing business because of the 15 character hostname limit on all operating system flavors of virtual machines. Many linux folk will simply scoff and dismiss your product despite all its other virtues over this limitation (particularly when they discover it is due to Windows/netbios limitations... double scoff). Even though you can skirt around it I would argue it is probably enough reason for some to put it on the deal breaker list. Nobody enjoys hacking their way around these types of things. It should be supported within the product.
I would be interested in hearing arguments for keeping the limitation in place. 5.5 is on its way and I do not believe this has been lifted in that release.

The problem seems to be that console DNS settings are not correctly set during OVF/OVA deployment on the console (looks like a bug). Event though DNS settings are correct on the web mgmt page the solution is to change DNS settings there and restart the VSM VA when prompted.
Yes, the hostname is properly set within the Edit Settings of the virtual appliance (vApp options). Also, the hostname of my virtual appliance is currently set to the proper name within the OS and that is because I have ensured the proper DNS entry is in our DNS server. However, I just did a test where I deleted the DNS entry for the FQDN of our Log Insight appliance from our DNS server, then if I reboot the Log Insight virtual appliance, the OS name will switch back to "localhost" because it can't find that entry in DNS.
Can anyone please help, how we can trigger a specific java method when a specific AgentID (is passed as input to) a method in Gemfire using FuntionAPI;

Im running this as a domain user account that has local admin rights and UAC is disabled. I will try local account
I have a VMView 5.1 setup with 50 Licenses for VDI desktops. I have not yet had any training on the product - that comes next month.
Can I provision more linked clones than I'm licensed for provided they are not in use by a customer?
Example;
50 total online VDI Linked Clones with Persistent Disks, created after the June Windows Patch Tuesday.
July patch cycle comes around, and I need to recompose the clones. Some are in use when I recompikle them in the afternoon. The next mornign I come in and delete the June Linked Clones. In theory I would have 100 VDI systems online at one time before I could delete the "old Linked Clones". Can I do this provided I do not go over the maximum number of licenses with in use systems?
I noticed in the Product Licensing and usage page the system tracks Current and highest usage. Is this how VMWare 5.1 tracks the license.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Julien,
Thank you for the reply and welcome. Will definitely look up your suggestion. What do you recommend for the shared storage and HA?
Also, will the VCenter installed in my current PowerEdge server or to the new PowerEdge server that I will use as the redundant? Please feel free to add anymore suggestions.

Don't rename. Please see here for step by step instructions in packaging .NET.
Point #11 talks about creating the entry point.
Allan,
For high availability on VMware you need minimum 2 hosts. So you will need to buy another Dell Poweredge R710.
Then you will have 2 possibilities but in all case upgrade your esxi to 5.x :
:2 hosts (R710) ,vCenter, VSA, VDP and HA.
1 - Install a vCenter VMware vCenter Server Virtualization & Server Management Software
2 - Implement VSA (Vsphere Storage Appliance) if you cannot buy a Storage Area :vSphere Storage Appliance - Shared Storage for Everyone. Here, VSA will share your local Storage and create Replica of your local datastore. (So if you have 2 hosts with 4TB each) , you will have 2 TB available.
3 - Implemement VDP (Vmware Data Protection) It is for backup your VMs. vSphere Data Protection Advanced: Backup and Recovery for vSphere environments
4 - Create a Cluster with HA (High avaibility) enable. if you lost a host, all your vm hosted on it , will be restart on the other.
In this case you will not loose your local storage (4TB).
2 hosts (R710), vCenter, Storage AREA, VDP and HA.
1 - Install a vCenter
2 - Install a storage area, using iSCSI, FC or NFS
3 - Implemement VDP (Vmware Data Protection) It is for backup your VMs. vSphere Data Protection Advanced: Backup and Recovery for vSphere environments
4 - Create a Cluster with HA (High avaibility) enable. if you lost a host, all your vm hosted on it , will be restart on the other.
I hope this will help you.

Julien
I am running a Windows 2008 R2 guest using VMWare Workstation 7.1.5. The guest has a web application installed that is only compatible with MS Internet Explorer. The guest network is setup to use NAT.
When my host is connected to my company's local network I can use the host's Internet Explorer to access the guest's web application with no issues.
When my host is not connected to my company's local network (completely disconnected, or connected to another network) I cannot use the host's Internet Explorer to access the gust's web application . But I can use the host's Chrome or Firefox to access the guest's application.
My company has my host IE so locked down that I can't make any changes to it. Is there something I can do with my network settings to to get IE to think it is connected to the company's local network?
Thanks Steve
Thanks...because of the deployment I can not use Datastore clusters...I wish I could though.
Don't know if this is a factor, but I see this in the Win8 Host's Scheduled Tasks:
Name: Optimize Start Menu Cache Files-S-1-5-21-4075228474-1082787419-3685243060-1001
Author: Microsoft Corporation
Description: This idle task reorganizes the cache files used to display the start menu. It is enabled only when the cache files are not optimally organized.
On second look, I'm doubting that this is a factor. It relates to the Win8 menuing system, not VMware's Unity funtion ot the Win7 Guest's menuing system.
Hi Julien,
Thanks a lot! Will the VCenter installed in my current PowerEdge server or to the new PowerEdge server that I will use as the redundant? or to both? What is your recommendation for the Storage area? Do you have any ball park costs for these setup you have mentioned? Thank you so much for your help.
Regards,
Allan
Same thing with local admin and UAC turned off on a domain computer
