Resource pools vs. per vm resource allocation

$

Hi, I'm a security guy trying to understand some host hardening guidelines, not much vmware knowledge. I'm trying to understand the differences between resource pools and setting per-vm resources. Specifically around the host hardening guidelines in http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/techpaper/VMW-TWP-vSPHR-SECRTY-HRDNG-USLET-101-WEB-1.pdf In that guide VMP04 has this for recommendations "Use shares or reservations to guarantee resources to critical virtual machines. Use limits to constrain resource consumption by virtual machines that have a greater risk of being exploited or attacked, or ones that run applications that are known to have the potential to greatly consume resources." I've done a bit of research and I can't seem to figure out if a resource pool is setup properly can that limit the total amount of memory/cpu that a guest can use or must those limits always be set in the resources tab on each individual vm's properties.

Well there you go. I've never used VMWare before on OSX. I've always been a windows guy. Kind of disappointing to lose functionality.

Thanks for the help

Re: Horizon View 5.2 new install, protocol failure on desktops

did i miss something? i was having the same issue!! and i was up till 2 in the morning doing this haha (my agents would be stuck in the startup mode and then eventualy going to the protocol failure when upgraded to view agent 5.2.0. I do not see anywhere in the 5.2 documentation saying that this appblast feature needs to be installed when customizing the install. The only thing that needs to be there according to the documentation is the the "core". i added appblast to my configuration and now all of them come up as available. Also i do not see an updated list in the 5.2 documentation describing all of the features that you can use when using the ADDLOCAL command line switch. I can only find them in the view 5.0 administration guide and appblast is not even mentioned anywhere that i could see.

Re: Cannot relocate virtual machine

Hi!

I don't think so - I tried to clone VM to the same storage (block size 4, max file 1024GB), VM has thin disk 500Gb (only 50GB used), with Veeam I tried to backup this VM to storage appliance (Data domain 620) and then I tried to copy VM (again via Veeam). All without result.

Also, our data-store connected by FC - no NFS...

Allan,

No need to create a second vCenter, if you have already a vCenter you can use it. With HA in case of a host failure, the vCenter will be restarted on the other host.

For me , choice the first one . Because if you choice the second recommandation  you will loose the investissement of your local storage (4TB).

Then , please call VMware Sales, they will be better than me to discuss costs . I am just an engineer Contact Sales

Julien.

Point #11 is talking about creating entry point by editing the package.ini file. Do i have to edit the package.ini file and rebuild net framework and how to create entry point for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1.exe in package.ini?

Thank you Julien. Will contact Sales for the cost

BTW, on the new host that I will purchase, Do I need to install all the VMs (AD, Exchange, BES) again?

SNMP Configurations require vCenter?

$

I'm currently running vCenter on top of a Clustered pair of 2 ESXi 4.1.0u3 hosts.  I configured the SNMP configurations is vCenter to point to our appropriate receiver.

A couple of questions come to mind with this, can someone please enlighten me!

Although the SNMP configurations are applied in the vCenter Settings, do they need to be configured on each individual ESXi Host?  If so, how is this performed?

On a separate scenario (has nothing to do with above), I have 2 ESXi Hosts running ESXi 4.1.0u3 - yet they are not in a cluster and do NOT contain a vCenter Server.

How can I go about configuring SNMP for each of these individual ESXi Hosts?

Thanks for the help prior guys!

No you don't need to do that . I think you will need to take a course for understanding all VMware's functionalities.

You can use the Move-VM cmdlet to move a VM to another datastore: E.g.:

Move-VM -VM 'MyVM1' -Datastore 'MyDatastore1'

Log Insight is a standalone product and during the announcement licenses were listed as $200 per OSI. In addition, license packs were sold in pack of 25. For more information you would need to contact your rep.

Fletch00 - if your question is answered can you please mark it as so

Re: Need for vSphere Syslog Collector?

Hey Mike - from Log Insight you can run a query on a specific host (i.e. add a constraint where hostname equal <blah>) and then you can export the results (available from the menu drop-down to the right of the Search button). With that said, a support bundle contains more than just ESXi logs. In most cases, VMware support will likely ask for a full support bundle instead of just logs from a particular host. Also, if you are using Log Insight, then there is no real reason to continue using the ESXi syslog dumper tool.

The reverse DNS lookup is likely causing the issue. Thanks for reporting this, I will ensure it gets added to the release notes.
