If you are reproduce this issue consistently, I suggest you to contact VMware support. I did not see this issue in my environment
Re: After restore of VM, web client does not see VM , it is there with vSphere client.
Re: Breaking a HA-DRS cluster in two cluster
I do fully agree with Bayu's suggestion.
Re: IPMI vs iLO vs WOL.:::DPM??
Thanks Mustafa. It is helpful.
Re: SRM with Essentials Plus, licensing vcenter Q.
I kind of thought that might be a possibility. I wonder if I could manage all the hosts from one vcenter server even though they are associated with different vcenter servers.
It's definitely time to talk to vmware about this!

Re: Error: ''VSAN is not licensed in this Host'
hi vicky , thanks for your Answer.
Last question, Please could you tell me where can i get (if possible) a trial license key to test VSAN? I'm entering the vmware site but cannot locate the option to ''REQUEST'' a temporary trial license for VSAN, since in the version I just installed of Esx and vshpere 5.5, vsan license appears as '' expired'', even though I just install them.
thanks
Re: vCenter Server Appliance checking for update hangs
Hello vNEX,
Thanks for your answer. I already checked for that log.
It doesn't exist yet as the update process didn't start start.
HDD space is also available.
Re: Could not connect to one or more vCenter Server systems: VCENTER APPLIANCE 5.5
Hi Browlin
Did you get the error when you are logging in with domain user from AD?
Have you tried logging in with username administrator@vsphere.local?
After adding user / group from AD you would need to add the permissions from vSphere Client/Web Client using administrator@vsphere.local.
See the installation guide here
Identity Sources for vCenter Server with vCenter Single Sign-On: vSphere 5.5 Documentation Center
"vCenter Single Sign-On does not propagate permissions that result from nested groups from dissimilar identity sources. For example, if you add the Domain Administrators group to the Local Administrators group, the permissions are not propagated because Local OS and Active Directory are separate identity sources."
The domain alias is also important, you would need to use the correct/exact domain alias, see this KB: http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2035510
Check the default domain that is configured in vCenter SSO using administrator@vsphere.local user.
If the default domain is not your AD domain, then to login using AD user you must specify the domain in one of the following ways:
- Including a domain name prefix, for example, MYDOMAIN\user1
- Including the domain, for example, user1@mydomain.com
Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Bayu
PowerCLI to rename a snapshot
Hi Guys,
I have a task to query an infrastructure (around 50 folders) for specific snapshot name and rename it.
Let's start with a specific folder:
Folder name = CI133
Snapshot = InfraNew
Renamed Snapshot = InfraOld
Is it a hard script?

回答頂きありがとうございます。お世話になっております。
一度、VMware-toolsをアンインストールしてみました。
自分のPCではCtl+Alt+F2でCUI画面に移行することができました。
それで、
# sudo /usr/bin/vmware-uninstall-tools.pl
Re: PowerCLI to rename a snapshot
It is not a hard script. You can change the snapshot name in a PowerCLI one-liner:
Get-Folder -Name CI133 | Get-VM | Get-Snapshot -Name InfraNew | Set-Snapshot -Name InfraOld
Re: Install VM on Win XP Computer Can XP become infected throught the VM?
I have the same question. I am running linux mint as a guest in vmware on xp host. I only use my browser from inside linux guest. Can microsoft unsupported xp host get viruses through this arrangement?
Want to start linux mint guest in full vmplayer screen
I have vm player running on xp. I want vmplayer to open to full screen by default. where is there a setting for this?
I would also like the linux guest os to start up in full screen. I have to resize it every time I start. Is there a setting for this?
Re: Vcenter service 5.5 doesn't start after domain change
Hello sajal1
We have a vcenter server in domain A (windows 2003 domain).
We are building a new windows 2012 domain (domain B) so we have migrated all our servers to the new domain. One of them is the vcenter server (5.5). The vcenter has installed using simple install (sql database on the same host).
After changing the domain of vcenter server the vcenter service does not start. Something has to do with the change of the FQDN of vcenter after domain change. The name of vcenter server was x.a.local before migration and after migration is x.b.local. DNS functions ok.
We have changed the log on account of the service to a domain account (domain administrator) but this not helped.
Re: Consumed vs Active vs Granted
Most of the counters are not available beyond 1 hour. vSphere is not a performance monitoring tool, it's more like a platform administration tool. You should be using the bundled vCenter Operations (the edition bundled with vSphere is free. Certainly, it consumes resources too) for performance management and troubleshooting.
I'd watch for Contention first, then Utilization. This is because high contention is bad, regardless whether you have high or low utilization. On the other hand, if you have high utilization, but low contention, that means your investment on the infra is being used well :-) You may need to buy more infra, but that's a Capacity Management discussion, not Performance Management (I agree they are the same topic on 2 different time scale).
For utilization, I'd watch for the following:
- for VM: Usage (which is Active)
- for ESXi: Usage (which is Consumed) and Active
I'm tracking Consumed at ESXi level as it shows what was active before.
I won't worry much about Granted once I track Consumed, as Consumed = Granted - Shared.
Hope that helps
Has anyone installed ESXi on an old XW8400 Workstation and make use of the SAS RAID?
So I dug up an old HP XW8400 Workstation, but it is missing some parts and I thought I would see if anyone has this thing running with the SAS RAID, because most of the forum discussions and problems seem to center around the SATA RAID. So is this even possible? I do not want to invest any money and then have it be for NOTHING...
Re: Has anyone installed ESXi on an old XW8400 Workstation and make use of the SAS RAID?
Well, you are in luck, because I had this question long ago but I never thought anyone else would bother but YES - it is supported - although everyone out there seems to focus on the SATA RAID which I have not bothered testing, since I use SAS Disks in my workstation as they are MUCH faster and can support MORE throughput. I have ESXi 5.1 Build 1483097 running with 2 SAS 450GB Disks in a RAID 0 configuration and the system just purrs...
It is an old machine, but I was surprised that it has been able to keep up with the latest versions of ESXi which is why I do not bother throwing it out so if anyone is out there looking into buying a CHEAP Workstation that supports ESXi 5.1 with Dual Quad Core Xeons, 32 GB RAM, and SAS RAID then you won't go wrong with this one. You will encounter ONE tiny problem though, but I guess I will wait until others try running this configuration before I share that juicy tidbit although it is relatively easy to overcome and just depends on how you run ESXi...
I will know if you tried it and go SAS...
amazing concept for Server-side Read/write caching & Hardware Independent on Vsan
Amazing features of Vsan which myself found are
Hardware Independent
Virtual SAN is a hardware agnostic solution that can be deployed on hardware of all major server vendors. This gives you the flexibility to run heterogeneous hardware with different configurations, operating systems, and magnetic disks.
Built-in Failure Tolerance
Virtual SAN leverages distributed RAID and cache mirroring to ensure that data is never lost in case of disk, host or network failures. Virtual SAN's SPBM feature lets administrators maximize resiliency by defining availability on a per-virtual machine basis: When setting the storage policy for each virtual machine, administrators can specify how many host, network or disk failures it can tolerate in a Virtual SAN cluster.
